Property Tax Reform
Property Tax Reform
Property tax reform that protects homeowners.
I don’t think families should be taxed out of their homes — or worse, lose them altogether over unpaid taxes.
That’s why I’m working to introduce a pair of commonsense property tax reforms.
Cap lifetime property taxes at 20%
Right now, homeowners in Michigan pay ever-increasing taxes on the home they bought — and those taxes never end. Under my draft legislation, once a homeowner has paid property taxes equal to 20% of their home’s original purchase price, their tax bill would drop to zero.
Ban tax foreclosures on homesteads
Families should not lose everything over a missed tax bill. Instead of foreclosure over back taxes, my draft legislation would create options for families to meet their tax obligations over time while still maintaining ownership of their homes.
These reforms are about fairness, stability and keeping families in the homes they’ve worked so hard to buy.
