SBs 227 & 228 – Healthy Choices Legislation
SBs 227 & 228 – Healthy Choices Legislation
Taxpayer-funded food benefits should not be used to buy soda or serve our children meals with harmful additives.
That’s why I have introduced two complementary bills to improve nutrition for Michigan families and protect the health of our students.
Restricting SNAP purchases of sugary drinks (Senate Bill 227):
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are meant to provide healthy nutrition for families in need, not subsidize soda and other sugar-loaded beverages. My legislation would prevent SNAP funds from being used to purchase sweetened drinks, helping families make healthier choices and ensuring taxpayer dollars promote wellness. At least 12 states have received waivers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to implement restrictions on SNAP.
Eliminating harmful additives from school meals (Senate Bill 228):
Our children should not have to worry about food at school being harmful. This bill would prohibit certain dangerous additives and substances in school-provided meals, ensuring the food they eat supports their growth and long-term health.
These proposals are about protecting health, promoting responsible use of public funds, and giving kids the best start possible.
