Lindsey opposes abortion legislation, supports measures to protect women and children

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Jonathan Lindsey, R-Allen on Thursday issued the following statement after Senate Democrats rushed a number of abortion-related bills through to a vote Wednesday afternoon:

“Voters were lied to about Proposal 3. They were lied to by Democrats who said that passing Proposal 3 would have no effect on commonsense safeguards that protect women and children. Now Democrats are dismantling those very safeguards.

“Democrat leadership rushed through legislation to remove important protections, in the process removing a provision to prosecute someone for killing a woman during an abortion. They once again sided with the radical elements of their base that want abortion on-demand at any stage and for any reason.

“I introduced legislation to protect parental consent when a minor is seeking an abortion — something that has been state law for decades but is now at risk. I also supported Republican amendments to strengthen penalties for partial birth and coerced abortions, add protections for babies with Down syndrome, provide resources to women in need, and support adoption programs.

“Democrats voted down each of these amendments.

“I supported a number of pro-life, commonsense amendments that a wide variety of people support. The passage of Proposal 3 did not give the state free reign to have unlimited access to abortion with no safeguards or safety protocols. Despite the actions taken up by the Senate today, I will continue to advocate for life.”
